Gender Identity Added to Protected Classes in District Policies

The Governing Board of the Maricopa County Community College District has voted to add gender identity to the list of classes protected by the District’s anti-discrimination policy. The change adds transgendered students and those with gender identity issues to the groups specifically identified as protected. The Board’s action came at its regular meeting September 27, 2011.

“This policy change means that District policies are in line with those at Arizona State University,” said Chancellor Rufus Glasper, who recommended the change. “We believe that adding this group to the District policy was the right thing to do.”

The proposal was proposed by Equality Maricopa, led by PVCC Faculty Dale Heuser. This group of District employees who are or who support lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender persons. It also was supported by the District’s Faculty Association.

Other protected classifications in the policy are: race, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, veteran status and genetic information.
