One day only!
On Friday, Sept. 7, you can get $7 tickets to see the PVCC Faculty Jazz Tribute to Miles Davis on Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Center for the Performing Arts.
In the latest installment of their ongoing series celebrating the greats of jazz, the Faculty Jazz Ensemble of Paradise Valley Community College are featuring the music of both Miles Davis and John Coltrane, presenting selections from the box set The Complete Columbia Recordings: Miles Davis & John Coltrane. These two giants of jazz set the standard for modern jazz performance and much of their work together is chronicled in these recordings.
The cornerstone of this box set is the iconic Kind of Blue, perhaps critically and commercially the greatest jazz album of all time. Released in 1959 this classic recording showcases their work together and highlights their contrasting playing styles. The inherent tension and balance between their styles would be a key consideration in the success if this music. Davis with his economical approach, choosing just the right notes and a careful approach to phrasing being an excellent foil to Coltrane’s more liberal application of notes, often working as much with texture and density as he did with melody.
