The Puma Women’s Soccer Team, now ranked fifth in the nation, earned its fourth shutout of the 2012 season against Cochise College on Sept. 4 with a 4-0 victory.
Ali Doller scored in the 4th minute with a cross from Ashley Stein. The Pumas had seven shots on goal the first half but the score remained 1-0 at half. PVCC scored again in the 57th minute when Jessie DeLeon crossed a ball to a wide open Selena Bracamonte, who placed the ball in the back of the net. Cassie Beckwith scored the third goal off a rebound shot from Erica Gonzalez. The last goal came in the 84th minute by Erica Peck, assisted by Doller. Rachel Cardwell and Tessa Hamberlin each played in goal for a half.
“We struggled in the first half keeping the ball on the ground,” said Head Coach Casey Bingham. “Once we put the ball on the ground, we started to make better decisions and had success on the field.”
On Sept. 1, the Puma women beat third-ranked Scottsdale Community College at SCC. Doller scored the first goal in the 15th minute, assisted by Beckwith. Twenty minutes later, Gonzalez scored off a rebound shot from Tianna Stewart. The second half remained close but neither team found the net.
“SCC is a very strong team, and our biggest test so far this season. Our attack did a good job finishing early in the game. Our defense was key in the win. The goalie’s played great and helped us get another shutout,” Bingham said.
The Puma women previously beat Mesa Community College 6-0 and South Mountain Community College 9-0. They next meet Glendale Community College 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at GCC.
