Home Learning Support Center empowers students

Learning to learn is one of the most important skills a student can acquire to empower them in their educational pursuits and reach their academic potential. The Learning Support Center at Paradise Valley Community College offers strategies that help students boost their learning power and improve critical thinking.

The LSC provides various services to help students become independent learners by developing new study tactics beyond the basic memorization skills Students who learn how to learn develop a “can-do” attitude that improves retention and success in college. LSC’s mission is to support learning and help everyone achieve their potential; to provide hope and encouragement in a safe environment that’s conducive to learning.

Students have enough obstacles in their lives. The LSC helps students improve self-confidence and provide them with a toolbox full of learning strategies and tools that benefit them their whole lives.

Students can drop by the LSC, across from the Library in Building E, for specialized tutoring, answers to questions about homework or help with class notes and problem solving. Appointments aren’t necessary for tutoring in accounting, anthropology, biology, chemistry, computers, economics, French, geology, history, math, physics, psychology, sign language, Spanish, statistics and study skills.

The LSC provides supplemental learning materials and resources for many PVCC classes, including videotapes, science models, study skills texts, study strategy tip sheets, software, activities, solution manuals, and handouts. In addition, study improvement materials are available to guide students through note taking, test taking, time management, vocabulary, reading textbooks, learning how to learn, memory and writing papers.

Student striving to improve their writing can make an appointment with Writing Center tutors who will assist them with grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, thesis statements, research papers, English as a Second Language (ESL) assignments and other writing tasks.

The Math Lab assists students enrolled in PVCC’s developmental math classes. Specially trained tutors support math students with various teaching strategies, including hands-on activities, cooperative learning and study groups.

Students who need practice hearing and speaking a foreign language can check out tapes, videos and CDs to support their studies. Materials also are available to help ESL students.
